Sunderfolk features a unique hybrid control system: the game runs on a PC or console (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch), while each player uses a compatible iOS or Android mobile device as their controller. Only one player needs to own the game to host a session, but all participants must download the free Sunderfolk app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. The game supports up to four players in cooperative play.

After installing the Sunderfolk app on your mobile device, launch the game on your PC or console. While control schemes may vary slightly between platforms, the interface remains consistent across all systems. This section of the wiki will refer to UI elements in a general, system-agnostic manner.
Once the game is running, the main screen will appear with options to start a new campaign or continue an existing one using your save data.
Connect to a game using the following methods:
Scan QR Code
Join local lobby: Connect to the same network as the main screen to join a local lobby.
Use a link: If your friend is already connected, they can share a link with you to join the game lobby.
After you make a selection, the main screen displays a QR code. To connect your mobile device, open the Sunderfolk app and scan the QR code. This pairs your device with the session.
There are also two alternative ways to join a game:
Join local lobby: Connect to the same Wi-Fi network as the host device to automatically discover and join the session.
Use a link: If another player is already connected, they can share a join link with you.
These other methods can be selected from a player’s controller device by pressing the “Can’t Join?” button.
Once everyone is ready to start, press the “Ready?” button at the top of your controller to start!

From the bottom navigation, you can access several groups of controls including, from left to right, your Character Sheet <cards icon>, Mission Guide <hex icon>, Rules Page <scroll icon>, and Settings <gear icon>.
The icons and their functionality will change slightly depending on if you are in town, in combat, or accessing certain screens. You will be doing missions and entering combat right away when you play Sunderfolk, so let’s start with the Rules Page and the Mission Guide.
The Rules Page will showcase the objectives and call out any important rules for the Mission. It's useful to check the Rules at the start of each Mission.
You can see the Rules Page for the “Bridge Besieged” tutorial in the screenshot below. Take a look and then follow the instructions in the screenshot to access the Mission Guide.
The Mission Guide lists everything on the map and provides additional information. Passive Abilities are displayed next to each entry, and you can tap the card icon next to a Monster, Hero, or Ally to access their Character Sheet for even more information. You can get see an example in the screenshot below. Then press X to exit.
